How Southern Califonia Wines Compete With Fine Wines All Over The World

by Gregg Hall

Wine is a beverage that is produced throughout the world. Each region may claim to be the best, but the wines produced in California can compete with all of them. California is responsible for 90 percent of the country's wine making. They have mainly been produced in the Northern regions but the relatively new comers from the Southern region have taken hold.

The southern region of California produces nearly 500 million gallons and ships them all over the world. The coastal town of Santa Barbara has an environment that grapes thrive in. It contains 21000 acres of vineyards and brings in $100 million to the region. Although contained in one region of the state, it has several different climates. The Pala Mesa Mountain region has weather that allows sunny days and cool evenings that the grapes grow well in. Conversely, the Cape Horn region enjoys hot weather, with the mercury often passing 100 degrees.

Thanks to this constant warmth in temperature, wine growing is not limited by adverse weather conditions. The wineries are able to operate throughout the year on a specific schedule. The spring is used to plant the new crop, while the summer is used to tend it. In the fall, the grapes are harvested and in the winter the fields are weeded and made ready for the spring. There are a variety of grapes grown in this region, including Syrah, Pino Blanc, Chardonnay and other French varieties.

The Temecula wine country is located south of Los Angeles. It contains 3000 acres of vineyards and is famous for wine tasting day trips. It sits approximately 1400 feet above sea level and enjoys a warm, dry climate. 14 of the wineries that are located there have won awards for the quality and taste of their wine. The wines of this region are affordable which lends to their popularity. They are not only known for their European grapes, but are also famous for producing delicious varietals from the Mediterranean. These include Violgnier and Pinot Gris. Despite the fact that they are relatively new wineries, that have made a name for themselves that is respected by many wine lovers.

Shadow Mountain wineries are located 4400 feet above sea level. Their specialty is the ever popular Cabernet Sauvignon.

Southern California produces just about every kind of wine, enough to please all of the wine lovers the region attracts. Many people come to the region not just for the beautiful scenery or the warm weather, but to take part in wine tasting from the many vineyards there. They enjoy a friendly rivalry with the Napa Valley and Sonoma vineyards that are located in Northern California, and have proven themselves to be equal in both taste and quality.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
Some Facts You May Not Know About Burgundy Wines

by Gregg Hall

The making of wine dates back several millennia and there are few wines more revered than those that come from France. What's interesting to note is that French wines are part American. This is because during the 19th century, European vineyards suffered from several different plights that included pestilence and disease. This pretty much wiped out the vineyards and in order to get healthy plants to grow, they had to be spliced with American one.

Some of the most notable French wines are the Burgundy ones. Burgundy is located in the central eastern portion of France. Using two varieties of grapes produces these wines. Using the Pinot Noir variety derives the red wine and the white wine is made from the Chardonnay Grape.

There are many types of Burgundy wines, and perhaps the difference in taste is due to the fact that the region has different types of soil.

Chablis produces the white wine that it is named after. These include Petit Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru, and Chablis Grand Cru. The soil that these grapes grow in contains fossils that help to fertilize it as well as limestone. The highest quality wine is considered to be the Grand Cru label, followed closely by the Premier Cru. This wine is both dry and fruity and enjoyed by all who taste it.
The Pommard region only produces red wine. These are strong, robust wines. At one time, the quality of this wine had decreased, however the vineyards have since improved them and they are once more known for their exceptional taste and quality.

The wines of Volnay have been loved for over 800 hundred years. These are elegant red wines that are so delicious that at one time a French King confiscated a whole production for his sole usage.
The Meursault region produces only white wines. These wines are considered by many to be the finest ones that are made in France. That should not be a surprise since the region has been making these wines since the year 1050. Garnered from so much expertise, these wines have earned the coveted Premier Cru Label.

Although Beaujolais is accepted as being a part of the wine regions of Burgundy, technically it a part of the Rhone-Alpes region. They use a different grape for their wines called the Gamay Noir. These are light fruity wines that go well with fish and fowl dishes.

The French have impacted the food and beverage industry heavily over the past centuries. They are well loved not just for their wine, but their pastries and chocolates as well. If you are able to vacation there and sample these treats straight from the source, you will be well rewarded for your travels.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida.
An Explanation Of Different Wines

by Gregg Hall

If you are thinking of entertaining in your home, having dinner parties, or you just want to have a bit of knowledge for that next romantic dinner here are some descriptions for you of different classifications of wine and why they are named the way they are.

There are many different types of wines which can lead to some confusion on which to choose for a particular meal or occasion. The information offered here should help clear things up a little.

In many cases wines will be named for the place where they are made such as Champagne while others are named for the grapes the wines are made from like Chardonnay or Merlot. Some get their name from other better known vineyards which are slightly similar such as Chablis and Burgundy. How a wine comes by its name is also influenced by local laws and traditions especially in Europe.

Below are the three main categories:

Regional Wines come first. These wines are primarily European and have a long history of distinctive wine making governed by strict regulations that determine which grapes to use for a particular wine and location. These laws and rules come from hundreds of years of experience using different grapes and fermentation methods which have resulted in knowledge of what will work best for a specific location. Almost all French, Italian, and Portuguese wines are classed in this category with regional names such as Bordeaux, Chianti, and Burgundy.

Variety wines or varietals are next, so named from the grapes from which they are derived. Many countries now allow for wines to be named in this manner though it is still helpful to know about the local variations and local laws. For example, in California a wine need only consist of 75% of a certain grape to be able to use that name while in France it must contain 100% of that specific type of grape. The countries in the “New World” tend to be more relaxed with their regulations and also will label their better wines with these varietal names while the “Old World” European countries tend to use this for their everyday table wines like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The generic wines are the last and are more common in the United States than other countries and for reasons explained above are virtually unseen in Europe. These wines have no regulatory labeling and no content or place of origin requirements so an American wine that is a sparkling wine may be called Champagne even though it is nowhere near the quality of the wine of that name coming from the Champagne region of France. Some other examples of this are Chablis, Burgundy, and Port. This generic naming can be confusing for the uninformed; the best advice is to go with the French made or other European wine where you are assured of the higher quality.

Hopefully the information we have shared with you here will be helpful to you. One other quick tip I will share with you is to remember this where meals are concerned; for red meats choose a red wine and for fish and poultry go with a white.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is a business consultant and author for many online and offline businesses and lives in Navarre Florida with his 16 year old son.
